Blonde Dolly (1987) | (Ft. Plackband)

NOTICE: This film program will be held entirely in Dutch and does NOT feature English subtitles. As part of the year-round Film in Den Haag program, we are presenting the story of Sebilla Niemans—better known as the businesswoman and sex worker Blonde Dolly. She worked independently, without a pimp, first on the Doubletstraat and later in her own premises on the Nieuwe Haven, where she was ultimately killed by strangulation. To this day, her murder remains unsolved.

A significant part of her story—which is featured in this film—takes place in the Zuidwal area, where our venue (de Helena) is located. We are not the only ones with a connection to her story; the band Plackband is also deeply invested in it. Through their new double album, Sebilla, they aim to draw greater attention to her life and the circumstances surrounding her murder. They will present this album live on November 15th during their 50th-anniversary concert at 'de Boerderij' in Zoetermeer. For this event, they will kick off the program with an introduction and some background on the life of Blonde Dolly.

In the context of historical films about The Hague, we are also serving a historical menu inspired by the city—based on cookbooks from The Hague’s domestic science schools throughout the years.

As a snack, we also offer a ‘bean bitterbal’—a take on the very first vegetarian croquette, which originated at Pomona, the first vegetarian restaurant established in The Hague.
