Description
"Romero's low-budget screenwriting, acting, directing, cinematography, and editing debut steadily gained cult status and spawned a flood of bloody zombie films. Radiation causes the dead to rise from their graves and wipe out an American village. A small group of people in a farmhouse holds out, but only one will make it through the night."
-VPRO Cinema
The father of the zombie survival genre, George Romero, unleashed a zombie craze with this film that is still palpable to this day, for example in The Walking Dead franchise. Night of the Living Dead (1968) was not only foundational for the horror genre but also in broader film history as a major film production that was rare at the time, featuring a Black protagonist who did not rely on ethnic tropes.
