Description
"This classic horror film still possesses a macabre beauty and a terrifying precision in its staging and cinematography, featuring Max Schreck as an unforgettable vampire amidst an oppressive atmosphere—utilizing extensive location shooting and a real castle as a backdrop."
-VPRO Cinema
The first film adaptation of Bram Stoker's *Dracula*... or so Bram Stoker's widow maintained. Murnau went to great lengths to rename the characters and to combine or split certain roles; he also transformed the vampire's image from that of a charming aristocrat into a grotesque, rat-like recluse. At the time, these changes were insufficient to argue that *Nosferatu* (1922) was an original work. After director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau lost the lawsuit regarding the infringement of Bram Stoker's intellectual property, a German court ordered the destruction of all copies of *Nosferatu* (1922). Fortunately, at least one film reel survived; otherwise, *Nosferatu* would have become a legendary "lost media" case—a tragic loss for a remarkable work of German Expressionism.
